Lake Superior has a pleasant effect on local temperatures.  The lake modifies local temperatures resulting in cooler summers and warmer winters.  Lake Superior is often referred to as the "Great Air Conditioner" for its ability to temper the summer climate in Duluth.  The proximity of the lake to the city also results in lower frequency of severe storms.
