Early Childhood Screening Merritt Family Center 510 N. 40th Ave. West
Minnesota Law requires an early childhood screening for all children before entering kindergarten. The screening is offered free of charge through the Duluth Public Schools for any child age 3 1/2 to 5 years of age. (The optimal age for screening is around the child's fourth birthday). Screening is required in the following areas:
Sensory Screening (vision and hearing screening) Developmental Screening (standardized screening of fine and gross motor, concept, and speech and language development) Growth Screening (height and weight measurement) Immunization review Summary interview with the parent

DULUTH HEAD START Head Start serves low-income families with children ages 3-4 who live within the Duluth city limits. Services:Social Services, Parent Involvement Education, Services to Children with Special Needs, Health and Nutrition. September - June Program Options: Home Base serves primarily 3- year-olds. Weekly visits of 1 1/2 hours with parent and child. Center-base serves primarily 4-year-olds. Half day sessions, 4 days/week at various sites in Duluth. Snack, lunch, and transportation are provided. EARLY CHILDHOOD FAMILY EDUCATION (ECFE) ECFE is a program of information and support for parents and their young children from birth to kindergarten age. ECFE is staffed by qualified teachers who are licensed in Early Childhood and/or Parent Education. Purpose: ECFE's purpose is to help strengthen families by providing support to parents as they work to meet their child's developmental needs. Locations: Congdon Elem., Barnes Early Childhood Center, Copeland Community Center, Merritt Family Center, and Stowe Elementary. Services: Parent-group discussion, parent-child activities, early child education, toy and book lending libraries, parent/infant programming, and home visiting services. Call 628-4899 for more info. Other Preschool Options / Information LEARNING READINESS Learning Readiness Pre-kindergarten program serves children the year prior to their kindergarten enrollment. Children must be 4 years old by September 1st. Learning Readiness Pre-kindergarten classes are located at: Rockridge Piedmont Laura MacArthur Elementary Schools Parent education and special events for families are also offered. ARROWHEAD CHILD CARE RESOURCE & REFERRAL Child Care Resource and Referral provides individualized referrals to licensed family day care homes, child care centers, and preschools in the seven-county region - Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake and St. Louis. We match children with providers based on hours needed, age of children, type of care, location, and other criteria such as smoke-free, pet-free, small group, etc. This is sponsored by St. Louis County Social Services Department.
