(Source: Duluth Public Arts Commission) The Karpels Manuscript Library Museum The Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum is located in a former Christian Scientist Church building built in 1912. The structure is a beautiful building with a large main floor exhibit hall. As the ceiling is high, the acoustics are excellent and the building is very suitable for musical concerts and other programs. Over the years many concerts, recitals, school concerts and singing groups have performed at this museum. Built in 1892, the old Duluth Union Depot once served as a gateway to immigrants. As many as 55 trains from Chicago, Canada, and both coasts connected there daily. The Depot closed its doors to rail traffic in 1969 and was renovated in the early 70's. It remains one of the country's finest examples of Chateausque-style architecture and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Today this distinctive building is the center of cultural life in Duluth, housing many unique museums and art galleries. The Depot is also home to five performing arts organizations. No wonder the Depot is a favorite destination of visitors from all over the world. Congdon. Glensheen resembles an English country estate built here in the early seventeenth century. Glensheen closely resembles the way it looked when the Congdon family first moved in on November 24, of 1908. A majority of the furnishings are original to the time the estate was first occupied. In 1968, Glensheen was given to the University of Minnesota by the heirs of Chester and Clara Congdon. On July 28, 1979, the estate was opened to the public as a museum. Since then over 2 million people have experienced a visit to Glensheen. The 62,382 square foot building houses aquarium exhibits, a natural history center, science center and cultural exhibits. Classroom space, a cafe and gift shop are also located in the building. It is one of three accredited zoos in Minnesota and the only one outside of the Greater Metro Area. Nearly 150,000 people visit the Lake Superior Zoo annually. While they come from every state and at least twelve foreign countries, the majority are residents of Northern Minnesota. In June, it becomes, for some, a grueling test of endurance in Grandma's Marathon. In the fall, the Edmund Fitzgerald folks see it as "almost home" in their quest for the ultra marathon. Scenic highway 61 has been designated a Federal Scenic Byway. There is no highway logo that goes with that designation, but the route will be highlighted and noted on future highway maps. Lodging, restaurants and gifts are available along the scenic drive. The "Tweed Art Gallery" first opened to the public in 1950 in what had been the family home of George Peter Tweed, a successful Duluth businessman and a collector of European and American art. After his death in 1946, his wife, Alice donated this important art collection to the University of Minnesota Duluth. Today, the Tweed Museum of Art encompasses nearly 15,000 square feet of exhibition space in nine galleries, housing a and a collector of European and American art.
